The Formula to Remove VAT

Net = Gross / (1 + Rate / 100)
VAT Amount = Gross - Net

The key thing to remember is that you never simply subtract the VAT percentage from the gross price — that gives the wrong answer. You must divide by the VAT factor. See the worked examples below.

Common Mistakes When Removing VAT

Do not subtract the percentage directly

The most common mistake: removing 20% from GBP 120 by calculating 120 x 0.20 = 24, then 120 - 24 = GBP 96. This is wrong. The correct net is GBP 120 / 1.20 = GBP 100. The difference is GBP 4 — which adds up quickly across multiple invoices.

Why the division method is correct

VAT is always calculated on the net price, not the gross. So 20% VAT on GBP 100 net = GBP 20 VAT = GBP 120 gross. To reverse this you divide by 1.20, not subtract 20% from the gross.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I remove 20% VAT from a price?

Divide the gross price by 1.20. For example GBP 240 / 1.20 = GBP 200 net. The VAT amount is GBP 40.

How do I remove 23% VAT from a price?

Divide the gross price by 1.23. For example EUR 492 / 1.23 = EUR 400 net. The VAT amount is EUR 92.

What is the difference between removing VAT and zero-rating?

Removing VAT means extracting the VAT element from a price that already includes it. Zero-rating means a product or service has a 0% VAT rate applied — no VAT is charged in the first place.
